Diamond Beach — Ice and Wind

Ice scattered across black volcanic sand catches what little light filters through the storm.

Setting

Winter afternoon

Observation

The wind arrives first.

It pushes hard, carrying a mix of rain and snow across the empty shoreline. The Atlantic moves in wide grey waves beyond the beach, and scattered across the black sand lie fragments of glacial ice.

Some pieces are small and rounded. Others stand taller, their surfaces clear and angular, as if freshly broken from a larger mass.

Against the dark volcanic sand, the ice catches what little light filters through the cloud cover.

Moment

Walking along the shoreline feels like moving through a field of glass.

Each wave pushes new pieces of ice toward the beach before pulling others back toward the sea. The wind drives sleet sideways across the sand, and the sound of ice grinding lightly against itself mixes with the rhythm of the surf.

The scattered fragments shine faintly even under the heavy sky.

Reflection

Even without sunlight, the ice holds its own light.

The beach seems to gather the fragments for a moment before the ocean eventually takes them back.
