Isla Tortuga — Shared Ground

The island appears untouched until a closer look reveals how many lives depend upon the same narrow stretch of shore.

Setting

Tortuga Island

Puntarrenas, Costa Rica

Summer afternoon

9.76917° N,  -84.89312° W

Observation

Approach is through the Gulf of Nicoya. The water remains calm, but visibility shifts near the shoreline, turning opaque where the sand lifts.

The beach holds a sharp boundary—white sand giving way quickly to dense forest behind it.Sound carries easily across the water, voices traveling farther than expected.

Moment

Movement gathers at the edges.Fish cluster just beyond the shoreline where the water changes depth.Footprints disappear almost immediately where the sand meets the water.Offshore, boats hold position, loosely set by the current.

Wildlife moves through the same space without pause.Macaws pass overhead. An iguana remains still in the trees.A mother pig and her piglets cross the beach between people and water.

Reflection

The landscape holds its own order.

Movement follows it—whether people notice or not.
